How do I monitor student progress?
Each candidate needs to produce a portfolio of evidence that
contains a full set of evidence for each of two different
purposes. This portfolio should be produced once the candidates
have learnt, practised and applied their skills in other contexts.
Whilst the candidate is acquiring and developing their skills, there
is a need for detailed and constructive formative assessment designed
to support the learning process. This may include:
- technical support on 'how to', 'why' etc
- encouragement to provide more detail, go a bit further
etc
- correction of, and support to improve, spelling, punctuation
and grammar
- discouragement of plagiarism including how to attribute material,
how to summarise and synthesise (hopefully in coordination with Communication
key skill).
There is more detailed advice on assessment of learning on the QCA website:
www.qca.org.uk
The teacher will need to monitor and record skills learnt,
practised and applied for each learner. Once a learner is
secure in a range of skills then they may begin to work on
portfolio evidence.
During the production of the portfolio (which is a piece
of assessed coursework) there is a requirement to carry out
summative assessment of the work against the national standards
to ensure that the evidence meets all the components and criteria
of the unit. Records of candidate achievement will be needed
for both internal and external moderation.
The tasks/assignments used to generate portfolio evidence
should not also be used as learning tasks. Candidates should
be secure in their skills before producing their portfolio.
